Introduction is a key to the successful speech

Изображение
We move on and now we are studying the structure of the speech, more specifically the introduction. We have five speeches from the internet and two tasks about these speeches. TASK 1 There are five attention-getters mentioned in the textbook: - asking a question - making references - making a startling statement - giving a quotation - telling a story So we need to identify which attention-getter was used in each video 1. How will we survive when the population hit 10 billion? by Charles C. https://www.ted.com/talks/charles_c_mann_how_will_we_survive_when_the_population_hits_10_billion The attention-getter is asking a question. 2. Still Standing by Ramona J. Smith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Tev43VNRIc The attention-getter is asking questions. But I would say that it was a kind of a perfomance illustrated a boxer. 3. Every kid needs a champion by Rita Pierson https://www.ted.com/talks/rita_pierson_every_kid_needs_a_champion/discussion?...en#t...

Education for Parents

In Public Speking Course we need to perform two speeches. The first one was informative and very soon you'll read the analysis of that speech and the second one will be persuasive. In this post you will learn the topic of my speech, the general statement, the purpose and the objectives. The topic: Education for future parents. The general statement: People should get special education before becoming parents. The purpose: to pesuade that we should get prepared for the parenthood. The objectives: - to tell about problems that parents face - to explain why it's important to prepare to become parents - to share some ideas how to oranize the educational process

Challenge №3. "Conversation with the Professor"

Изображение
My third challenge is to start a one-on-one inconsequencial conversation with one of my professors. To tell the truth, it was not vey difficult. After the class I asked, whether she likes the weather this autumn or not. She answered that she didn't like September this year as it was too cold. But October is too warm, on the contrary. I agreed with her and that was the end of the conversation. So after compliting this challenge, I understood that this situation was not really challenging for me as it's not scaring to talk to a person and the professor is a person too.

Eureka!

I have so many situations when I sit down to write a speech but I don't have any idea how to start, what examples to bring and how to make it creative and interesting to listen. Fortunately, there are some methods to overcome the crisis. In this post I will try them starting with the warm-up. Warm-ups One letter The main idea of this warm-up is to choose a letter and then name at least 10 words staring with this letter. I take the letter "l" and the words are: life, line, landscape, league, leapfrog, lemon, level, look, love, lost . Random words At the website https://www.textfixer.com/tools/random-words.php I need to generate 5 words to write a paragraph using them. Yesterday I got a strange, mystical letter from an anonym. This anonym made me an appointment on  my balcony to tell me the shocking truth . So today after turning back from my work, I'm a diplomatic agent by the way, I hope to find out who this anonym is or who makes this kind...

Challenge №2. Telephone an organization

Изображение
Nowadays we can do many things with the help of the Internet avoiding personal communication with people. We ca order food, buy clothes, book tickets. But sometimes we have to talk to a worker of an organization to ask for some information. And my challenge of this week was connected with this activity.  On Tuesday I called to a hospital to make an appointment for my granny. That hospital was private. I couldn't get throgh for a long time. And then they recalled me. I made an appointment. Maybe, this action was not quite similar with one I nad planned to do but the main idea is the same, I think.  The main fear was that the stuff of the organization might be impolite with me or I might get lost. This fear may be the result of the old tradition. We get used that the ladies engaged in services are not always polite with clients. But this hospital turned out to be very good from this point of view that made me glad.

Setting out clear, measurable objectives

Изображение
The last post were devoted to the purposes of the speech. But besides purposes there are also subjectives. These ones need to be specific. And this task can help in setting out clear, measurable objectives. In the following three speeches I need to identify the possible objectives. 1. Ken Robinson "Bring on the learning revolution!" The possible objectives: - why education needs to be innnovated - what the main tendencies should be and what they really are in the modern educations - what the way out of the crisis is 2. Zifang Su "Turn around" The possible objectives: - what is scaring for a child - how she turned around to the world and stoped being afraid 3. Matthew McConaughey winning Best Actors The possible objectives: - who and why he is thankful to - who is his hero

Clarifying the Purpose

Изображение
I can't stand doing something poinless when I don't see or can't understand the purpose, the main idea of my business. I think (or I hope) that many people share this opinion. Time is priceless and we should concsiously choose what is worth our time. So when prepare your speech, you should (or even must) think about the purpose of your speech and get a clear idea of what you want to say. And then, when you come to the stage, you must show that your speech is worth listening to it. Otherwise, noone will care. So the first task of this week is to learn how to clarify the purpose of your speech. There are some questions to help us in this. Before writing a speach, a good orator should ask himself: - Why should I want to talk about this? - Why should anybody want to listen to me? - What single message would I want to put across? - What need in the audience do I want to have satisfied when I have finished speaking? - When they all walk away what state would I li...

Three useful tips to overcome stage fright

Изображение
Performance situation is usually a stressful one. But we can always reduce the level of stress by following some tip which help in overcoming physical simptoms. The main idea of the first tip is to recognize the stress as excitment. You need to decieve your body by thinking of the presantation as something "fun" rather than stress. In this way adrenaline rush works for you rather than against you. The second tip I found useful is watch what you eat. And the most important thing here (at least for me) is about sugar. The sugar level should be neither too low nor too high. But if you really needs happy food, you just must eat something that makes you happy. For me it's always chocolate. That's why I had some problrms with sugar level but now I try to maintain it. And the last tip but not the least. Make yourself laugh. I have noticed that every successful person has a good sense of humour. There is a physiological reason for it. The more enjoyment you are feeling...

The "fight or flight syndrome"

Изображение
Human body is built up by a genius. It can adapt to almost any situation and it always tries to survive. When a human needs to run away from the danger, the heart starts beating faster. When a human heed a rest, the brain switches off and a human fells asleep. And it turns out that stage fright symptoms are part of these body's Primary Threat Response. Usually, performance situation doesn't require you to do anything physical, but your body thinks that it does because you consider this situation as dangerous one. The body perceives the adrenaline signals, assumes that some sort of attack is possible, and simply prepare you for the worst. You can feel these preparations before and during your performance. Everyone has different symptoms. And I'm going to describe one which is very close to me. When your body is under stress, it understands that your major organs needs additional oxygen. That's why the tiny blood vessels serving your toes, fingers, ears and nose constr...

Challenge №1. The "wrong" number

Изображение
This week finished for me whith the beginning of the challenges. And my first challenge was to call a random number and say "I'm sorry, I seem to have dialled the wrong number". Before calling a stranger, I felt exciting, my pulse became faster and I wanted to stop doing it. But I overpowered these thoughts and called. While dialling, I rehearsed the dialogue in my head. When the stranger answered, he turned out to be a young man. I said: Hello, mom! How are you? Firstly, he didn't catch what I said, so I had to say it one more time. And then when I should have understood that I had dialled the wrong number, I said: I'm sorry, I seem to have dialled the wrong number". The stranger answered: "Oh, OK". And we hung up our recievers. The first thing I felt during this challenge is great relief as my stranger didn't react in an agressive way. And this made me understand that people forgive such small mistakes of each other because we are all hum...

10 weeks to challenge myself

Изображение
Stage fright... It sounds scaring, doesn't it? Many people, including me, have this fear. We are afraid of what people around us think of us, we are afraid of being fools. We are so scared that sometimes, though well prepared, we fail our performances just because of anxiety. Personally, I had many speeches that could be quite good if I hadn't been so nervous.  But being confident may be trained. And some social challenges will help it. So further you can see 10 challenges to me to feel more comfortable in communication with the unfamiliar people. I will do task a week and describe the results in this blog. The List of 10 challenges 1. Ring a wrong number on purpose and say "I'm sorry, I seem to have dialled the wrong number" 2. Telephone an organization and ask for some information. 3. Initiate a one-on-one conversation with your professor about something inconsequential. 4. Ask a person in the street for a mobile phone or some money. 5. Start a conver...

I'll be there for you

Изображение
This time I'm going to analize Josephine Lee's speech. I think I should start with the reasons why I have chosen these video. First of all, this perfomance was really expressive, and emotional colouring is very important for me. Another reason is that the topic about friendship is of current interest in my life because now I don't communicate with my school friends as much as I want. And finally the phrase "I'll be there" is a line from the sound-track of one of my favourite TV-show Friends. The evaluation process will be carried out according to the Public Speaking Evaluation Chart. I. Speech Content The speech was well organized. There were clear division into the introduction, the body and the conclusion. Josephine started her speech with making a startling statement that was also the name of her speech. Also she gave the topic of her speech. In the body she proved that her thesis was right but she didn't use parenthetical word like ...

Evaluating Speech Content Component

Get ready to read a long post because it contains a lot of things. Actually, there are two things: the evaluation of three persuative speeches and my comments and thoughts about these speeches and the process of evalustion. For me it's always difficult to evaluate the other people's works because sometimes I don't want to injure these people by criticizing their work. sometimes I just don't know the criteria of the evaluation. All in all, it's always a problem for me. And this task is great opportunity to practice this skill and using the special chart. Let's begin. And one more thing I need to do is to choose the winner. These results will be at the end of the post to carry on an intrigue. SPEECHES TO PERSUADE. SPEECH 1 1. Introduction : (10 points) What technique(s) was used in the introduction? (attention-getter?) Asking the questions. Any link element? The question "But what is it, to live right?" Was the thesis statement give...
