Introduction is a key to the successful speech
We move on and now we are studying the structure of the speech, more specifically the introduction. We have five speeches from the internet and two tasks about these speeches.
TASK 1
There are five attention-getters mentioned in the textbook:
- asking a question
- making references
- making a startling statement
- giving a quotation
- telling a story
So we need to identify which attention-getter was used in each video
1. How will we survive when the population hit 10 billion? by Charles C.
https://www.ted.com/talks/charles_c_mann_how_will_we_survive_when_the_population_hits_10_billion
The attention-getter is asking a question.
2. Still Standing by Ramona J. Smith
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Tev43VNRIc
The attention-getter is asking questions. But I would say that it was a kind of a perfomance illustrated a boxer.
3. Every kid needs a champion by Rita Pierson
https://www.ted.com/talks/rita_pierson_every_kid_needs_a_champion/discussion?...en#t-445278
The attention-getter is telling a story.
By the way, this speech is my favourite one. Rita is such a great orator that I just fell in love with her and her ideas. If I could attach the video on the wall, I would do it. That's because her topic is very close to my life and profession.
4. How great leaders inspire action by Simon Sinek
https://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action?referrer=playlist-the_most_popular_talks_of_all%C2%A0#t-9489
The attention-getter is asking questions.
5. Looks aren't everything. Believe me, I'm a model
https://www.ted.com/talks/cameron_russell_looks_aren_t_everything_believe_me_i_m_a_model?nolanguage=en%C2%A0#t-38333
The attention-getter is making a reference
TASK 2
There should be transit between the attention-getter and the topic sentence in the introduction. And now we will evaluate the transitions in every speech on the scale from 0 (poor transition) to 3 (well-done transition).
1. How will we survive when the population hit 10 billion? by Charles C.
https://www.ted.com/talks/charles_c_mann_how_will_we_survive_when_the_population_hits_10_billion
3 because the transit was good. The speaker started the performance with the question connected with the topic of his speech. Though this transit was a little bit long, I think.
2. Still Standing by Ramona J. Smith
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Tev43VNRIc
3 becaue the transit was logic and I even didn't notice it
3. Every kid needs a champion by Rita Pierson
https://www.ted.com/talks/rita_pierson_every_kid_needs_a_champion/discussion?...en#t-445278
3 because the topic statement is a part of her story.
4. How great leaders inspire action by Simon Sinek
https://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action?referrer=playlist-the_most_popular_talks_of_all%C2%A0#t-9489
3 because all Simon's quastions are connected woth the topic of his speech.
5. Looks aren't everything. Believe me, I'm a model
https://www.ted.com/talks/cameron_russell_looks_aren_t_everything_believe_me_i_m_a_model?nolanguage=en%C2%A0#t-38333
3 because the topic statement was the answer to the reference she made.
Hey! Thanks for your observations! I'm glad you enjoyed the speeches.
ОтветитьУдалитьJust a few corrections.
In speech 2 "Still Standing" by Ramona J. Smith the attention-getters are:
1. illustration (life as a boxing fight) or it’s also possible to define as telling a story
2. asking questions (Can think of the time what the life tried to knock you down?)
And
In speech 5 "Looks aren't everything. Believe me, I'm a model", the attention-getters are
1. making a reference (I feel there is uncomfortable tension in the room right know because I shouldn’t have worn this dress)
2. making a startling statement, where the statement is an action, i.e. changing her outfit (which is the key component in her introduction)
+3. asking a question (so why did I do that?)
I know these two are pretty hard. Anyway, we are learning and trying to take the best out of these activities and speeches ;)
Thanks a lot for your comment and corrections! I really appreciate it)
